HB 1438 has been signed by the Governor in the state of North Dakota and goes into effect immediately. This will allow H2A workers to get their drivers licenses and CDL's without having a Social Security #.
Thank You

I went down state Oklahoma yesterday, found some freeze damage at one of the places we cut down there, but my customer said to definantly plan on coming down, damage just varied by varieties and planting dates from what I saw. In the Enid area where they were talking of so much damage, I really saw some good looking wheat, nice green heads, in the flowering stage. Then some other fields in the area looked to be partially headed out, then had a dark cast to the leaves and yellow leaves as well with a joint that had turned to mush. As we left Garfield county last night they were placed in a tornado warning! Extensive damage was done to the expo center I heard, I hope that the Deere dealership right across the road wasn't hit, noticed probably 30+ olsen combines parked on the edge of the place. Pray for those in that area. Any word on Kansas crops? I went to Ness City Kansas a couple weeks ago, and it was starting to turn around looks like, My customer there said that they had been dry for quite some time then got a snow, followed a week later with rain. I'm running 3 9610's this year, I'm looking for some acres near Holyoke if anyone hears anything I'd love to hear from you. I just found this site after a referral from a friend recently. Plan on joining soon!

Attention Kansas Custom Harvesters. Please contact the legislative representatives in your district and encourage them to support the new length law changes we are trying to get passed. Moran and Roberts are already on board, but want to hear from each of the districts to know that other legislative people are willing to back the changes. For more information on the changes, consult your 2008 Directory and look at Nebraska's length laws. We are trying to get the same laws passed in Kansas.

MEMBERS AND NONMEMBERS OF USCHI:
Have you ever wondered how your costs, as an individual business, compares with the custom harvesting industry's cost? Making money is not as simple as knowing your costs and charging slightly more to garner a profit. If your costs are especially high for the services you provide, the cost-plus-markup process will mean you don't get jobs - you've priced yourself out of the market! If your costs are especially low, you don't maximize profits as you leave money on the table - you could be charging more. Rather, long-run profitability is about being a low-cost operator for the services you render in terms of $/acre, $/hour, or $/bushel. But, to do that, you need to know your costs relative to others, especially for specific categories so that you can focus your effots to continually improve management.

This brings "CHAMPS" into the picture! By participating in this OUTSTANDING program (developed by two Ph.D. agricultural economists from the Kansas State University - Terry Kastens and Kevin Dhuyvetter) you will know your costs relative to the other harvesting businesses who participate. The 2009 harvest will mark the 13th year of this program with USCHI.

Custom harvesting firms that pay the required fees ($175 per year for USCHI members and $200 per year for nonmembers) and return the informational survey forms in a timely manner are considered CHAMP members. For your participation in the program, you will receive a member report showing how your business stands relative to the group as a whole. An example of that report from the 2008 year for harvesters can be downloaded at the CHAMP's website: http://www.aganalysisplus.com/champ/champ.htm or simply click on the "CHAMPS" link found just to the left of this blog. You will also find other informative materials at that site, along with the survey forms that will be required to complete.

If this has sparked some interest in participating in the 2009 CHAMPS program, you can contact Terry Kastens at 785-626-9000 or tkastens@ksu.edu or Kevin Dhuyvetter at 785-532-3527 or kcd@ksu.edu.

Terry and Kevin would like to have all participants for the 2009 harvest CHAMPs program signed up before May 1, 2009. I have a feeling, though, if you're a LITTLE late, they'll be ok with it.

If you're serious about your business........you've GOT to seriously consider this program!

Please do not use this site to bash other harvesters or their businesses. This is a discussion board for talking back and forth, if you have a problem with a harvester, you need to take it up with them. This is not a sounding board for disgruntled employees. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

last year I was on a harvest crew from potter NEB and I had got my hands on some barley from a bin in the combine and I had shipped it by mail 22 LBS and this year I took the barley and planted it just on the north side of the Red River of TX and Okl line and it seams to do very well good the wheat is like 4 to 4 1/2 inches tall
and my barley is 5 1/4 inch tall and no I did not poor my Keystone light on it to grow it
and last week I planted 47 pounds of Canola bird seed 250 miles south of the red River TX
and it is showing leafs on the steams and it looks like it just might make it but I will keep you all farmers inform on what and how it makes out for the 2009 ... I will have it tested for the weight and protein
